FAQs
When Should You Change Your Oil?
Modern engines run off two types of motor oil: conventional and synthetics. Engines that require conventional oil have a recommended oil change interval of between 5,000 to 7,500. However, for engines that run off synthetic oil, that range is increased to between 7,000 and 15,000 miles.Â
The amount you change your oil also depends on how and where you drive. These types of journeys or conditions will shorten your oil change interval:
Short trips (under 5 miles)
Severe driving conditions
Stop and go driving
Carrying heavy loads or a trailer on the back of your vehicle.
How Often Should You Check The Oil Level Of Your Car?
We recommend you check the oil level of your vehicle at least once a month.
Why Do You Need An Oil Change?
A vehicle's engine has a lot of moving parts. As these parts move and rub up against one another, this friction creates excess heat. This is offset by oil. Your car’s motor oil absorbs all this heat and allows all parts to work together without overheating. However, it can’t do this forever.
Gradually, oil breaks down and wears out. And, when it does, it’s less effective at absorbing heat and lubricating the engine effectively.
Failing to regularly check and change your oil could cause your vehicle's engine to break down and lead to long-term engine damage. For this reason, a regular oil and oil filter change is essential to keeping your car healthy.
What Happens During An Oil Change?
A full-service oil change from a Goodhood mobile mechanic involves more than pouring new oil into your engine.Â
We’ll remove and dispose of your old, dirty oil and carry out oil change service with the oil type suits your vehicle’s needs, including:
Full synthetic oil change
Synthetic blend oil change
Conventional oil change
High mileage oil change
In addition, we’ll replace and recycle your oil filter.
The best part is we’ll do all this in your driveway or office parking space for a fraction of the price of a repair shop oil change.Â
Can Cold Weather Affect The Oil Changing Process?
In the cold, engine oil becomes a lot thicker. As a result, it flows much slower throughout your engine and is harder to pump through the engine block. This not only causes engine stress but also puts additional strain on your vehicle's battery - which is also weakened in cold weather.Â
Therefore, to keep your vehicle in good health throughout the winter season, we recommend getting an oil and filter change.
Can You Change Oil Brands Between The Oil Changes?
Switching oil brands between oil changes is not harmful to your engine life. However, you have to ensure you choose an oil marked with The API Donut of the same level. The API Donut identifies oils that meet current API engine oil standards.
However, our mobile mechanics will also follow the recommendations provided in your vehicle owner's manual for viscosity and API category.
What Is Synthetic Oil?
Synthetic oil is a man-made lubricant that consists of artificially made chemical compounds.
Synthetic motor oil is a synthetic blend of base oils that are of a higher quality than conventional, less-refined base oils. However, its main base oil is usually crude motor oil.Â
These superior base oils give synthetic motor oils many advantages over conventional oil, such as:
Less likely to acidify and oxidize
Greater chemical stability
Harder to break down and lose properties
Better in extreme climates
Enables greater fuel economy for your vehicle
When Is Synthetic Oil Necessary?
If your vehicle owner’s manual says you need it, then full synthetic oil is 100% necessary. In fact, most newer vehicles use either a full synthetic oil or a synthetic blend.Â
However, if it doesn’t say synthetic oil is required, it’s still worth considering as an option.Â
If any of the scenarios below are true for you, a switch to synthetic oil may be necessary:
You make a lot of short trips
You live in an area with extreme temperatures
You frequently drive in severe driving conditions
You have an older engine or vehicle type that’s prone to a murky buildup
You frequently drive in stop and go traffic
On top of that, synthetic motor oil or a synthetic blend prolongs your oil life and fewer oil and oil filter changes. This is a major benefit to the environment, as used crude oil is a major source of toxic waste
